15 MW / 60 MWh battery represents important step towards local energy hub

Venlo, September 08, 2026

An energy storage system is set to be developed at Windpark Greenport Venlo (WGV), helping to reduce pressure on the local energy system while creating opportunities for the development of a local energy hub. WGV-EOS, the consortium behind the battery project, has successfully reached financial close, paving the way for the construction phase of the 15 MW / 60 MWh energy storage system. The battery is expected to become operational in the summer of 2027.

Initially, the battery will support grid balancing and participate in the electricity markets. In addition, opportunities for local connections are being explored. The longer-term ambition is to further develop Windpark Greenport Venlo into an energy hub, with the battery forming an important part of this integrated energy system.

WGV-EOS will operate without requiring any additional electricity offtake capacity from the grid. Through cable pooling, the battery will be connected to the wind farm’s existing grid connection and electrical infrastructure. cable pooling The project represents an investment of nearly €12 million, a significant proportion of which is being financed by ING.

WGV-EOS, the project initiator, is a partnership between Greenchoice, ABN AMRO Sustainable Impact Fund (ABN AMRO SIF) and cooperative project developer Windunie.

Optimal use of existing grid capacity

By installing the battery at an existing wind farm, the renewable electricity generated can be used more efficiently while making optimal use of the existing grid capacity.

Windpark Greenport Venlo consists of nine wind turbines located along the railway line between Venlo and Horst-Sevenum. Six turbines are located north of the A67 motorway, while three are situated near the junction of the A67 and A73. Together, the turbines generate enough electricity to supply approximately 40.000 households.

The battery will be charged exclusively with electricity generated by the wind farm. This electricity can be used to help balance the power grid. The battery will charge when there is a high supply of renewable wind power and electricity prices are low. When electricity is scarcer, the stored energy can be supplied back to the electricity grid.

Collaboration as the basis for realization

Green Energy Storage (GES) is responsible for the development of the battery project and has, among other things, managed the contracting of battery system supplier Alfen and the financing process with ING. GES will remain closely involved in project supervision throughout the construction phase and, following completion, will be responsible for the asset management of the energy storage system.

Following completion, Greenchoice will be responsible for the intelligent control of the battery, with the aim of optimising the use of the generated energy. Windunie will be responsible for project supervision and financial management.

“Our battery will be charged exclusively with electricity generated by Windpark Greenport Venlo. While this approach is not unique, it does add complexity to the operation of WGV-EOS. It is a challenge we fully embrace, because integrating energy storage with a wind farm allows renewable electricity to be used more efficiently. This project demonstrates that this additional complexity can be successfully addressed through strong collaboration.” thus Nick de Wilt, Manager Projects & Energy Hubs at Windunie.

“We look back on a very positive collaboration with our fellow shareholders ABN AMRO SIF and Windunie, as well as our partner GES. With this energy storage system, which operates entirely without grid offtake capacity, we can make even more efficient use of locally generated energy. Together, we are contributing to a more flexible and future-proof energy system.” thus Peter van de Groenendaal, Head of Project Development at Greenchoice Integrated.

“Energy storage is playing an increasingly important role in an affordable, reliable and sustainable energy system. This project demonstrates how existing renewable generation can be used more effectively through the smart integration of energy storage. We are proud to contribute, together with our valued partners, to a solution that not only creates value today but also lays the foundation for the further development of a local energy hub, bringing the benefits of renewable energy generation closer to the surrounding community.” thus Thiadmar Visserman, Senior Associate at ABN AMRO Sustainable Impact Fund.

“Battery projects of this kind bring together many different elements: technology, financing, contracting and integration with existing energy infrastructure. By developing these elements in an integrated way from the outset, we are now able to move into the construction phase. Together with our partners, we are helping to build an energy system in which renewable generation, energy storage and flexible energy use are increasingly connected in smarter and more efficient ways.” thus Guus Bengsch, CEO of Green Energy Storage.
