Battery storage system BESS Apeldoorn reaches COD and enters Dutch energy markets

The battery energy storage system “Apeldoorn”, located in Beemte Broekland near Apeldoorn, has successfully reached Commercial Operation Date (COD) and is now operational.

With a power capacity of 15 MW and a storage capacity of 30 MWh, the system contributes to increased flexibility and stability of the Dutch electricity grid.

The grid-scale battery energy storage system was developed by Green Energy Storage (GES) on behalf of Encavis and is designed to participate in the Dutch energy markets. By delivering fast and reliable balancing services, the system provides flexibility exactly when and where it is needed.

Integrated energy solution

The battery system is co-located with the nearby solar park Bloemenkamp, enabling locally generated renewable energy to be stored and dispatched during periods of high demand or grid stress. This integration enhances the efficiency of renewable energy usage and supports a more resilient and future-proof energy system.

The system will be active in multiple flexibility markets, including:

  • Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR)
  • aFRR services
  • Imbalance markets
  • Congestion management

Strong collaboration across the value chain

The project reflects close collaboration between experienced partners across the energy value chain. Green Energy Storage developed the project on behalf of Encavis, while Alfen acted as EPC contractor and was responsible for the delivery and electrical integration of the battery containers. The system is equipped with CATL EnerOne+ battery technology, and Greenchoice acts as offtaker and market interface.

The commissioning of the Apeldoorn battery marks an important step in the further deployment of large-scale energy storage in the Netherlands. By adding flexibility to the electricity system, the project supports the integration of renewable energy and contributes to a reliable and balanced grid.

Green Energy Storage continues to develop and realize battery storage projects across the Netherlands, both at high-voltage grid locations and in co-location with solar and wind parks, contributing to a more flexible and sustainable energy system.
