Bomhofsplas BESS officially live: more flexibility for the Dutch electricity grid

Zwolle Green Energy Storage (GES) has officially put the battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Bomhofsplas in Zwolle into operation.
A BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) is a large-scale battery energy storage system that temporarily stores electricity and later returns it to the grid. This balances electricity supply and demand, supports grid stability, and enables the efficient use of more sustainable energy sources, such as solar and wind power.

This milestone will make additional flexibility available on the Dutch electricity grid, allowing more sustainable energy to be integrated and grid connected.gestie is illuminated.

Strong link between solar and storage

The system has a capacity of 11MW and a storage capacity of 22 MWh. Thanks to the direct connection with the floating solar park Bomhofsplas (27 MWp, operational since 2020), locally generated solar power can be efficiently usedgeslayers and are used later when the demand for electricity is highest. The battery provides services such as balancing, congesTie management and grid stability. The project thus directly contributes to a safer, more efficient, and more sustainable operation of the Dutch energy system.

Collaboration between strong partners

The project is an initiative of Green Energy Storage (GES) and was realised in collaboration with:

  • Energy Fund Overijssel (EFO)
  • Greenchoice
  • Dekker Group
  • Privatis (electrical installations and integration)
  • Bluefinger Energy

From idea to operation in one year

The project stands out not only for the unique coupling of a battery to a floating solar park at an active sand extraction site, but also for the exceptionally short turnaround time:

  • October 2024 – Financial close completed
  • December 2024 - Start of construction
  • April 2025 - Delivery of battery containers
  • June 2025 - Connection to existing grid connection and solar park
  • August 2025 – Performance tests and joint control of solar park + battery
  • September 2025 – Official opening of EOS Bomhofsplas

The battery was made operational just twelve months after financial close, demonstrating decisive collaboration and the speed with which large-scale energy storage can contribute to a more robust energy system.

Quotes

Guus Bensch, CEO & Founder Green Energy Storage (GES):
"With EOS Bomhofsplas, we're adding concrete flexibility where the system requires it. This is an important step toward a robust and future-proof grid."

Nienke Rijpstra, Investment Director Energy Fund Overijssel:
With an existing grid connection and the dual use of the land, the Bomhofsplas is an ideal location. The battery is installed on the site of the sand extraction site, meaning no agricultural land or natural areas need to be sacrificed for this project. We are pleased that, in addition to the solar park at the Bomhofsplas, we can now also contribute to energy storage here.
