Permit final for GES BESS project Sequoia (200 MW / 800 MWh)
Green Energy Storage (GES) has reached an important milestone in the development of large-scale energy storage in the Netherlands. The permit for the battery storage project Sequoia has become final and irrevocable. This means the project is fully permitted and ready for the implementation phase.
Sequoia is a large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a capacity of 200 MW and a storage volume of 800 MWh. The project will be located in the municipality of Oosterhout and will begeslottery tickets on the 150 kV station of TenneT in Geertruidenberg. Sequoia is designed as a long-term energy infrastructure and is specifically developed as a congestie softener.
By strategically drawing and returning power, Sequoia actively contributes to relieving the burden on the electricity grid. The project thus plays a vital role in increasing the flexibility, reliability, and stability of the Dutch electricity system.
The rapid growth of renewable energy is driving a significant increase in the need for flexibility and balance in the electricity grid. Sequoia was developed to address this by providing FCR and aFRR services and by actively contributing togestie softening.
By strategically absorbing and returning power, Sequoia helps relieve the grid and utilize sustainable generation more efficiently.
With this project I contribute GES contribute to a robust and reliable energy system in which large-scale energy storage plays a structural role.
With Sequoia you choose GES consciously opted for a name that goes beyond a project label. The name refers to the sequoia tree: one of the oldest and most powerful trees in the world, known for its ability to withstand extreme conditions and keep ecosystems in balance.
These properties form the core of how GES Battery energy storage approaches: as a silent, robust infrastructure that supports and strengthens the energy system. Not as a temporary solution, but as a structural foundation for the long term.
Power: 200 MW
Capacity: 800 MWh
Grid connection: 150 kV TenneT-station Geertruidenberg
Installation layout
224 battery containers
53 medium-voltage transformers
1 high-voltage transformer (150 kV / 33 kV)
Sequoia represents strength, stability, and sustainability. The project is designed as long-term infrastructure and is the first project within a broader portfolio of GES-developments, inspired by timeless natural forces.
With this line you build GES to a recognizable family of projects: the new giants of the energy system.
Next step: realization
With the permitting process completed, the focus now shifts to the implementation phase. GES is taking the next step in its mission to develop large-scale energy storage as the foundation for the energy transition.
About Green Energy Storage (GES)
Green Energy Storage develops, realizes and operates large-scale battery energy storage projects in the Netherlands. The company focuses on strengthening the energy system by adding flexibility where the grid needs it most.
